PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia (AP): Indonesia's president called for Indonesians to be better protected from abusive employers in Malaysia on Friday, as the two countries signed a pact to boost bilateral trade.
Three high-profile abuse cases last year - including the murder of an maid in her employer's house - highlighted the ill-treatment of Indonesian workers and strained relations between the neighboring countries.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who arrived Thursday for a three-day visit, said he and Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi "openly discussed" the workers' cases.
"We want to ensure they (Indonesians in Malaysia) are protected and that they are given their rights," Yudhoyono said at a joint news conference with Abdullah in the administrative capital, Putrajaya. "I have also told (the workers) to obey Malaysian laws when they are here."
Almost 60 percent of the more than 2 million foreign workers in Malaysia are from Indonesia, including more than 270,000 maids.
Malaysian courts were to rule on 17 cases brought by Indonesians against their allegedly abusive employers, Yudhoyono said. "Justice must be upheld anywhere," he said.
Although the protection and treatment of Indonesian workers in Malaysia has improved, both countries hope this situation will get better in the coming years "so that the presence of Indonesian workers will benefit both Malaysia and Indonesia," Yudhoyono said without elaborating.
Abdullah and Yudhoyono also witnessed the signing of a pact to set up a joint trade and investment committee to boost trade, and announced that the two countries would establish a panel to resolve cultural disputes such as one over claims that Malaysia used traditional Indonesian songs and dances in its tourism campaign.

    Text 5
This text is for questions 36 to 40

In my opinion teachers should not smoke at school. There are several reasons why I strongly disagree if teachers do smoking at school.
Firstly, ‘no smoking’ regulation applied for students will not be effective at all.. People say that teachers are as models. Therefore, they should give good examples for their students, especially in behavior. Moreover, Indonesian people belong to a society who have paternalistic behavior pattern. Indonesian youngsters always imitate what older people do. So it useless prohibiting students from smoking at school while their teachers satisfactorily inhale their favorite cigarette smoke.
Secondly, smoking makes classrooms and school environment dirty. Most of teachers who smoke carelessly throw away the cigarette ashes and ends everywhere. They scatter on the table, on the floor, in the glasses, on pots, and at the school yard. This makes the school environment messy and uncomfortable place to study.
Thirdly, passive smokers become the victims of active smokers. Smoke coming out from cigarettes can dangerously affect the people around. Teachers should bear in mind that their students inhale poisonous smoke while they enjoy the taste of their cigarettes. As a matter of fact, people who do not smoke become victims of smokers at school.
Lastly, smoking makes nasty smell. For smokers cigarettes they love have nice smell. In fact cigarettes ends make bad smell. Fellow teachers always complain the smell of cigarette ends left by their colleagues who smoke. In classroom students have to fan cigarette smoke to get rid of the annoying smell.

    Text 7
This text is for questions 46 to 50

Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of communicating without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture. The basic function of a signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as, for example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication is very great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain meaning in and of themselves. A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and conveniently. Symbols are more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural perception. In some cultures, applauding in a theater provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain cultural messages.

Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage. They usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. As a result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based upon speech. Radio , television, and the telephone are only a few.

This text is for questions 21 to 25

Many stories, legends and myths have been associated with the kris. In the olden days the kris was an important weapon. Now it is (22) rarely worn, except at formal ceremonies (23) requiring the wearing of traditional costume.
No one knows exactly where the originated kris from. Many people say that it came from India because the kris is (24) wavy which is a well-known characteristic of ancient
Indian weapons. Others say it originated in Malaysia. The primitive Malay fisherman found a natural (25) weapon in the sting-ray fish. The sting-ray’s bone is barbed on both sides.
Later when the early Malays were introduced to metal, they made weapons which (26) conformed to their earlier natural weapons. This could have resulted in the making of the kris.
In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the kris was designed (27) mainly for fighting. Under the skillful hands of the Javanese state iron smiths, the kris became the national weapon of Majapahit, the Javanese state that (28) conquered most of the Malay world in the thirteenth century.
